James Nehring
James Nehring’s books and essays take us inside the world of learning, in classrooms and places beyond. For many years a high school educator, Nehring led the start-up of three progressive schools. Later, he joined the faculty of the University of Massachusetts Lowell where, as professor and Faculty Chair for the School of Education, he has advocated for schools that teach the whole child. He served twice as visiting professor with the George Mitchell Institute for Global Peace, Security and Justice at Queens University Belfast, Northern Ireland. He is the recipient of a Fulbright Award, a Brown University Alumni Award, and the Manning Prize for teaching. When he is not on the job, you can find him outdoors on his bike or trekking through the woods.
